Why our Great-grandparents were happy!

I was recently sent this email and thought it would be an interesting look into the world of medicines used around one hundred years ago. Have we come along way? I wonder how many medicines are on the market today that will be made illegal or restricted in another hundred years.
The picture above shows a bottle of Bayer's heroin. Between 1890 and 1910 heroin was sold as a non-addictive substitute for morphine. It was also used to treat children with a
strong cough.
Coca Wine contained cocaine. The above wine was produced by the Maltine Manufacturing Company of New York . It was suggested that you should take a full glass with or after every meal. Children should take half a glass.
Vapor-ol was a treatment for asthma that contained 46% alcohol and 3 grammes of opium.
Cocaine tablets for toothache. Very popular for children in 1885. Not only did they relieve the pain but they made the children happy!

Interesting post. I love the old containers. It looks so funny to see heroin in an old medicine bottle.

Obviously at some point society has realised why these drugs need to be legislated against, but to think that they were being given to children many years ago.!!

I think the whole pharmaceutical industry is a bit scary anyway. I'm sure there's heaps of things out there that are pretty dangerous, but they're still being sold because we just don't realise it yet. I prefer to stay away from drugs as much as possible. I very rarely take anything. And I'll usually go for the natural treatment first.
