A still from the video from the California State Fire Marhsall warning against washing clothes in petrol
Apparently, she was near an open flame and a spark ignited the fumes in her kitchen setting her alight. When her sons came to her rescue they were burnt as well.
The article was printed in the Sydney Morning Herald in the 1930s. On further investigation it seems that it was common practice to wash clothes that are badly stained in petrol. Kind of like a home dry cleaning job.
Apparently the practice was so common and the consequences so damaging that the Californian State Fire Marshall put out a video to warn housewives of the danger of washing their clothes in petrol.
It was an informative video called 'More Dangerous Than Dynamite'
You can view it here
It's a bit of a chuckle but hopefully it served it's purpose at the time.
