Vintage Use for Herbs and Flora

I remember at a family barbeque some years ago, we were all getting fed up with the amount of flies around the food on that typical hot Australian summer's day. My grandmother wandered down to my father's herb garden and pulled out a good handful of mint.
When she came back to the food table she scattered the mint branches throughout the dishes declaring that the fly problem was fixed. Apparently the little pests don't cope very well with smell of mint.
Last night when cooking dinner I confirmed this as I had some leftover mint in the fridge and put them in glasses of water strategically around the kitchen. It doesn't matter how many times I tell my kids (and hubbie) to close the screen door, one or two flies always seem to be buzzing around my head at dinner time. Not last night though. Gran'ma strikes again!
Another herb that was a favourite was parsley. If you were concerned about your bad breath then Gran'ma would hand you a clump of parsley to chew on. Apparently it neutralised any bad smells!
Aloe Vera was a great plant to have in summer time as if you had sunburn Gran'ma would break off a stalk and rub the sap over the affected area. It wasn't the best of smells but it was soothing.
Looking through some of my vintage recipe books I found a few more hints including:
Cucumber slices, lemon or orange peel soaked makes good soap for the face if used at night.
Sage is good for the teeth and can be used to rub them instead of a tooth brush. Rubbing would be less injurious than brushing.
