Our Gingerbread Man day
April 29th 2009 12:37
This vintage recipe idea was my four year old son's. He loves being in the kitchen with me and for some reason had it in his head that today he wanted to make gingerbread men.
So I delved into my old recipe books and found a lovely recipe in the 'Carry On' cookery book. While my son's idea of creaming butter and sugar is a little different to mine (He called it munching) we eventually got a good mixture together.
Then we made a simple icing with colour in it for buttons and facial features. Mind you some of the buttons turned into ties and on one gingerbread man, he's wearing a hat over his eyes!!
This is indeed a recipe where the experience of making it should be as enjoyable as the end product. It's a great bonding time with kids.
Method
1. Beat 1/2 cup butter and one cup of sugar to a cream.
2. Add 1/2 cup treacle or golden syrup and 1/4 cup hot water to the cream.
3. Stir in about 3 cups of SR flour and 3 heaps of ginger powder.
4. Mix and knead well, roll out and cut gingermen shapes.
5. Place on a greased tray and cook at 180deg C for about 10-15 mins.

As you can see from the photo, there are a few mistakes in there...but they're mistakes made with love...LOL!!
How many kids do you have? I have two boys, the 7 year old was at school that day and the four year old is the one who loves being in the kitchen.

Samaritan's Stories
I have two kids - aged 7 and 10. My seven year old is the one who loves helping me cook. If I'm cooking fun, the 10 year old will often join in. But usually it's can I help you cook and then he gets bored very quickly. But the 7 year old will often come into the kitchen when I'm cooking dinner and do little tasks for me.
And I think mistakes are great! I would much prefer to do a semi-standard job with the kids (on anything) than a perfect job by myself. I think mistakes make things extra special.

It says '3 heaps of ginger powder'.
Does that mean three heaped teaspoons or three heaped tablespoons?
I like ginger but I don't want to overdo it.

*blush* thanks for picking me up on that. I forgot to put in teaspoons...LOL....or I could say that I did it deliberately just to see if anyone reads the recipes!!!!
Hope you enjoy them!
