How did people keep their food
:
cold before refrigerators
Have you ever wondered how people kept their food cold before refrigerators were invented?
I remember my grandmother telling me about a corner in the kitchen that had a door in the floor leading under the house to a box where the ice was kept after being delivered to her house.
Every house had an area for the ice to be kept cold after home delivery by the ice man (like milk being delivered by the milkman).
It was delivered in big chunks and kept in the ice box which was wooden with a metal lining and a drain for the melting ice.
A newspaper article I came across from December 20, 1943 in The Courier Mail in Brisbane had a story about a shortage of ice for Christmas.
It said:
Principle ice manufacturers said yesterday that there would not be sufficient ice to meet the demands of the civilian population...There would be a big shortage if ice in Brisbane this year if there was normal summer weather, said the manufacturers.
The article goes on to say that many of the ice manufacturers reserves were depleted due to the demands of the armed forces at the time.
