Golden Crunch biscuits aka Anzac bikkies

The food editor where I work advised me the other day, in the middle of holding an Anzac biscuit competition from our readers, that the reason these particular biscuits were sent to the soldiers overseas was because, with all the ingredients in them they would be able to keep on the long trip overseas.
This indicated to me that Anzac biscuits must have been around for some time before and after World War One but in disguise. Sure enough, in my 'Carry On' cookbook, published AFTER World War Two (1949), I found a recipe for 'Rolled Oats Parkins'. It had all the same ingredients as Anzac biscuits although the amounts were a bit different,
Then in my CWA cookbook from 1965 I found Golden Crunch biscuits. If Rolled Oats Parkins was the grandparent, then Golden Crunch biscuits must be the parent of today's most Aussie biscuit.
In fact, in another cookbook circa World War Two they were called Aussie Crisps, so they were definitely on their way.
Here is the recipe for Golden Crunch biscuits, so enjoy as we remember the great sacrifice our soldiers made.
Ingredients
1 Cup plain flour
1 Cup sugar
1 Cup rolled oats
1 Cup coconut
4 ozs (125g) butter or margarine
1 T golden syrup/treacle/honey
2 T boiling water
1 t carb soda
Method
1. Melt butter, add syrup, water and soda.
2. Pour onto dry ingredients and drop by teaspoonfuls on a greased tray, leaving room for spreading.
3. Bake in moderate oven for 20 minutes.
