Cooking with the Basics
August 25th 2009 06:04
In days gone by the basic cooking utensils would have been fire and perhaps a bowl shaped from local tree bark, then later on pottery with crudely shaped spoons and ladles.
As time moved on pots, saucepans, ovens and other types of cookers were invented and became the new basics for the kitchen.
What is the minimum that you think you can cook decent meals with?
Even when camping these days, where we attempt to rough it, we are able to have barbeques that resemble outdoor gourmet kitchens, cooktops that can make a chef jealous and all the utensils that we would normally have at home.
What if you had to do without your kitchen? How would you prepare the evening meal?
That is what's happened to us. As I've mentioned in previous posts we have had to move house from the rental we were in, however, the house we are building isn't ready yet, so we have moved into the basement of Sir's cousin. While there is a bathroom and laundry we have no kitchen except for a microwave, BBQ and fridge. The laundry tub is our sink.
Most of our utensils and crockery are packed away, so there are no dishes for big meals, or even a pair of tongs. I did manage to find the chopsticks, however, so the local chinese has seen a bit of us.
Recipe books, especially my vintage ones have been packed too for safe-keeping. Salads are easy, as is egg on toast (we cook the egg on the bbq and we managed to keep the toaster out).
And of course, we have the kettle to make a cup of tea. THAT is definitely a basic.
